Chapter 17

Dante

I watch as August carries my Cupcake away. The urge to follow them, to protect my woman, rides me hard as August finally disappears behind the front door. What happened to her? I knew the woman was perfect, but this just confirmed it. She was beautiful as she straddled the man, bringing down the blade in repeated clean, sharp arches. I know August says Trinity was in a daze, but I saw the smile lifting her lips. She enjoyed the kill.

“Dude, I know you want to go after our girl and check on her, but in order to protect her right now, we need to clean this all up. Now, what are we thinking?” I glance over at Chase standing over the dead man, tapping his chin in thought. “He looks pretty shredded. We could toss him in the woods and claim an animal attack. Or go mafia style and feed him to the fish.” He waggled his eyebrows, looking a bit too excited at that thought.

“What did you find on the guy?” Chase hands over a wallet and some car keys. Looking back over my shoulder, I remember passing a blacked-out sedan parked down a way. “Anything else?” I open the wallet to find the bastard’s ID. Jimmy Smith. A boring name for a thug. Crouching down, I look over the bloody corpse. He is wearing dark clothing that is now saturated in blood, and it appears my girl did a number on him because his face is unrecognizable at this point. My woman did good.

“Take these keys and go check that car that we passed on the way here. Look for a phone and anything else useful. I have a feeling he might have worked for the mayor and his new partner.” Catching the keys, Chase heads to grab the car without a glance back. I hear a door creak open behind me, and I freeze. Fuck.

“She doesn’t want to admit it, but that girl needs you three.” I spin around, trying to make my body cover the body on the ground as Gran stands at her front door. With her hair set in curlers, she is comfortably dressed in a soft bathrobe and slippers. Her eyes glance down at the massacre just behind me before she lets out a heavy sigh. “I’ll go grab the bleach.” She turns, heading back into the house, and I watch dumbfounded for a minute. Did I hear her wrong?

I’m still standing there as I hear a car pull up behind me, then Chase’s hurried footsteps rushing forward. “What the fuck, man! Help me move the body before anyone sees it and calls the police. Nobody, no evidence.” His eyes darted behind me before widening to the size of saucers. “Shit, did Gran see? Wait, is she calling the cops? Fuck. What do we do, D?” Right as he finishes that sentence, Gran calls out.

“Alright boys. You take the body to the car. Then come on back and help me with this bleach.
